A friend of mine met with an accident driving in darkness. His legs were so hurt that he couldn’t move. What was the 36 was that he found himself unable to ask for help ? his mobile phone went out of 37 as a result of exhausted battery. Nothing could be done but 38 in cold wilderness. It was 8 hours later that day broke, and then the 39 of the rescue.
It is almost 40 that he could stand the horror in the darkness for so long. Even more surprising was his 41 : “First of all I checked up my 42 conditions and found myself not in fatal danger. As there was no 43 to call for help, I leaned back in my seat trying my best to keep the wound from 44 . In this way I dozed off.”
His story put an end to my regret for the 45 of an exploration adventure that happened last year. A group of young men 46 to explore a mountain cave and got lost. 47 to find a way out in the dark cave they were frightened and ran anxiously without a sense of 48 . Finally they fell dead in fear and exhaustion. According to the 49 people that found them, the place where they got lost was only about 10 meters away from the 50 of the cave. If they stayed on the spot when they lost their way and tried to 51 themselves, they would probably sense a faint light shining not far away.
Don’t you think that you can compare it with 52 itself? When you meet with obstacles (障礙) in life and work, you are lost in darkness. 53 you it’s unclear yet and you needn’t put up struggle 54 . It seems to be a negative attitude, 55 a person who can afford to do so must have foresight as well as a great courage in the first place.

Have you ever stayed up late? If so, you know that not getting enough sleep can leave you tired and grumpy . Not sleeping enough can also make it harder to think clearly the next day.
Sleep experts have long known that getting a good night’s sleep is important.
It helps kids perform their best during the day. A recent study shows that sleep helps improve problem--- solving skills and creative thinking.
For the study, two groups of volunteers answered a math problem. The group that slept for eight hours solved the problem correctly more often than the group that did not get enough sleep.
While you sleep, your brain is busy doing its “homework”. It sorts out information from your day. Getting enough sleep each night can boost your brainpower. That will help you do your best in school. Experts say that, in return, can lead to better grades.

Surfing?the art of riding a wave on a pointed board?is the wildest, fastest natural water sport known to man. In recent years, it has developed into a major sport around the world, from Australia to South Africa. Hawaiian experts risk(冒…之險(xiǎn)) their lives on huge, thirty foot swells(浪濤) against the wind of Oahu; Californians of all ages go out the year-round.
In the winter, surf-riders put on life-suits to ride grave waves so cold that their flesh turns blue.Surfing is no sport for weak persons. Swimming a quarter of a mile or more and pushing a surfboard out to where the swells are just right for riding can be real work. Then, at exactly the right moment, you climb up the wave and go fast across the face of a powerful swell with the white water jumping at your feet. The huge wave bites at your shoulder, threatening(威脅) at any moment to smash your flat. In the next several seconds, a cool head and lightning?quick action back to the pressure of the attacking wave will bring your board under control for that great ride down the back of the great, green mountain of water. Once on the beach, you know why surfing is growing in popularity as an international sport, and you’re glad to be a member of this new water world.
64. The first paragraph mainly tells us ______.

B. you will first ride on a board to reach the swells
C. you must first put on your life-suits before doing surfing
D. you must first swim to the swells with your board

When we think of leadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really, and how do they operate?
Leadership today is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it is short-term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something against their will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feel will do more harm in the long-term. They will also experience fear.
Fear causes the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function at his or her best. If they associate you with this emotion of fear, they will become less functional around you, and you will have succeeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a very good employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place in leadership.
The way we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and our understanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, which may be part of the work day; or we can employ them at the emotional level, so they became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their own motivation(積極性). Today’s work place is all about relationships.
Anyone works harder in a positive environment in which they’re recognized and valued as a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more for someone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the pay check is not the single most motivating factor (因素) in the work life of most people.
The true strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidence of emotional intelligence---knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single best thing you can do if you want to develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to the leadership skills.
67. An employee may have a feeling of fear in the work place when___.
A.he is forced to do things
B.be cannot work at his best
C.he feels his brain shut down
D.he thinks of his work as too heavy
68. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.People tend to associate leadership with fear
B.Working conditions affect people’s physical health
C.Good relationship is the key to business success
D.Smart people are more functional in the work place
69. To positively influence employees a leader should first of all __.
A.provide better suggestions
B.develop his own personality
C.give his employees a pay raise
D.hide his own emotion of fear
70. A good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to___
A.provide a variety of project for employees
B.help raise employee’s living standards
C.give employees specific instructions
D.deal wisely with employees’ emotions

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to a Chinese students they always say, “My spoken English is poor.” However, their spoken English does not have to remain “poor.” I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
Second, they are worried about making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENT NOT ACCURATE. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the rules to get your message across, to talk to someone in English, as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn’t matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then, you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
If you do not use your English beyond the classroom you will forget the English you know. Remember : USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.

A meaningful Activity
Our school has now started an activity with the subject “Get Rid of Bad Habits and Build a Harmonious Campus”
Bad habits do exist. Some students throw rubbish everywhere or spit in public. Some wear long hair. Others are even addicted to smoking and drinking. As students, we should break away from these bad habits. Besides, we should obey the school rules. In our everyday life, it’s important for us to help and learn from each other.
We urge the students to wear their school uniform and be polite to others. In the school, we should show respect for our teachers by greeting them.
During the activity, we’ll hold a picture show, a competition of classroom and dormitory decorations and so on.
In my opinion, it’s necessary to hold such activities. For one thing, it helps to develop the students’ good habits in life; for another, we need a harmonious and beautiful environment to study in.
As far as I am concerned, I will try to get rid of the bad habits to be a good citizen in the future.

M: Hi, Carol !
W: Hi, Mike! This should be a great show about the old building arts. Let’s go in.
M: Sure. Say, did you bring my book?
W: Your book ? Oh! I completely forgot.
M: You forgot ! But you promised! I need it to study for the test. Oh, I knew I never should have lent it to you.
W: Calm down. I just forgot. Look, after the show we can drive by the house and pick it up.
M: It’s pretty far out of the way, but I guess we’ll have to.
W: Don’t worry . I’ll treat you to a pizza to make it up to you.
M: Well, OK.
Text 10:
One day Bob and his two friends rode into the mountains. They put up their tents and then rode off to a forest to see how the trees were growing. In the afternoon, when they were about ten kilometers from their camp, it started to snow. More and more snow fell. Soon Bob shouldn’t see anything ten meters away. He could not find the road. Bob knew there were two roads ?one road went to the camp, and the other to his house. But all white now. Everything was the same. How could he take his friends back to the camp?
Bob had an idea. The horses ! Let the horse take them back! But what would happen if the horses took the road to his house? That would be a trip, of thirty?five kilometers in such cold weather!
